High school and older middle school students (ages 12-18) in any education setting (public, private, homeschool, online/virtual school) will learn the executive function skills necessary in the many areas used by the brain for success in academics, volunteer work, jobs and life to get things done on time at the best quality using the resources available.  Not sure what executive function skills are?  Read this article from Understood.org for a better understanding.  Our instructor is a second-career high school teacher with additional graduate credits in Special Education and training through Rush NeuroBehavioral Science Center and multiple coaching programs.  Her first career was project management and she maintains a certification at the highest level since 2003.  She has taught a more condensed version of this class online through Outschool for 4 years to over 1,000 students.  Each class section will be limited to 12 students.

Required Course Materials

  • If students are currently using a planner or agenda, please have them bring it every week.
  • Students who have smart phones should also bring them every week.

Additionally, students will need technical ability to access Nearpod.com, Study.com and Canvas learning management system.

What Does Class Time Look Like?
Each week, students learn a new executive function skill’s related habit or process that gets implemented during the week. The following week, we open with sharing results and challenges with these new skills/techniques in the context of their individual lives, then adding new content to incorporate.

The course will cover the following integrated skills:

  • Time Management
  • Planning
  • Organization
  • Task Initiation
  • Working Memory
  • Sustained Attention
  • Self-Awareness
  • Impulse/Emotional Control

These skills have overlap into life and job skills, but are taught in the context of their academic and personal/extracurricular needs with an explanation of how they connect later in life.

Time Required Outside of Class

Students will be given work to do every week that is less “homework” and more “lifestyle change” habits.  As a result, time spent on these initially will be more than after the skills have been mastered and incorporated into their lifestyle.  They should take less than 30 minutes/day plus another 1 hour once/week which can be done on weekends.

Parent Considerations
This course can help students struggling with a lack of organization, time management, planning, procrastination and poor work quality.  However, students who cannot see their current situation as problematic are unlikely to be willing to incorporate these skills each week to make progress. One of the ways to create buy-in with your teen (that is also reinforced during the course) is the idea of working more efficiently and wasting less time without sacrificing quality.

If you feel that your student may not willingly embrace these skills, please contact us about individual coaching to see if that may be an alternative.

Parents of students who receive support services in their school setting: please reach out to enroll in a section of this course that is specific to student who receive supports.  These sections are limited to a smaller number of students and some additional modifications to the coursework.  E-mail us about these options.
