Description
This small group, semester-long high school level lab serves as tutoring and support with student’s math curricula in Pre-Algebra through Geometry with additional activities to transform students relationship with math and ability to see it everywhere as opposed to an isolated (and tedious) subject. Students working on Pre-algebra through Geometry will bring their at-home curriculum for support and dedicated work time. On days that students do not need tutoring, they group will participate in varied math activities that help them build math connections through creativity, growth mindset and applying math to real life situations.
Parents and students will be participating in an online portal to keep on top of assignments and progress.
Math Lab – Pre-algebra through Geometry
In-person class Tuesdays, 2:00-3:15 pm with an additional approximately 30-45 minutes/day of work to be done between classes.
Registration is for Spring 2024 semester (16 weeks)
PREREQUISITE: Families should have selected a math curriculum. We certainly have multiple math curricula to test before purchasing a set for the student. If this is your family’s need–please let us know upon registering so that we can have a conference to determine a potential fit.

This is also an opportunity for students to work on instructor-led tasks for:
- Applying math to real life situations
- Creative thinking to enhance math performance
- Tips and tricks for math foundational skills
- Growth mindset math to help instill confidence and perseverance
There may be additional opportunities for learning and activities depending on the group and individual needs.

[rara_toggle title=”What Does Class Time Look Like?” status=”close”]During our first class meeting, we will be covering some executive function skills to help students stay on track
Live class time will assume students come prepared and have at least 30-45 minutes of curriculum work to do although this time might be spent with some tutoring. The remaining time will be spent in a variety of tasks and social activities to help students feel more comfortable with math, build a growth mindset around math to help them persevere through difficult periods of learning, and learn how to use math in new ways or recognize it in their lives where they may not have seen it before to dispel the mentality that math is an isolated subject.

[rara_toggle title=”Parent Considerations” status=”close”]This is a teen-oriented lab which is effectively a study hall for math with access to a math-qualified instructor for help with math challenges as needed. Students should have tried their work and run into problems before class; and submit an online request form each week so that the instructor can prepare appropriately for class.
During weeks that are light on student needs, we will be doing mindset math activities to help students see their relationship with math in a more positive manner.
If you have a child that struggles with unsupervised online access, please contact us before registering to be sure the structure of our class is a good fit for your child. Although students sit with their screen visible to the instructor, this is for light supervision and the occasional check in more than direct supervision.
